How Congressional Trading Tracking Works

Understanding federal transparency laws, disclosure timing, and how to read the data.

The STOCK Act of 2012

The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act requires Senators and House Representatives to publicly disclose stock trades, options, and bond purchases valued above $1,000 within 30 to 45 days.

Periodic Transaction Reports (PTR)

Trades are published through Periodic Transaction Reports. Values are disclosed in standardized statutory ranges (such as $15,001–$50,000 or $1,000,001–$5,000,000), which Snowball Analytics parses and contextualizes.

Committee Assignments & Sector Context

Committee assignments (such as House Financial Services, Energy & Commerce, or Armed Services) provide public context regarding industry oversight, regulatory hearings, and policy discussions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key information regarding Congressional trading rules, net worth methodologies, and disclosures.

Yes, members of Congress are legally permitted to buy and sell equities, bonds, and derivatives. However, they are strictly prohibited from using non-public material information gained through their legislative duties for private gain under the STOCK Act of 2012.
Federal law requires members to file a PTR within 30 days of receiving notice of a trade and no later than 45 days after the trade date. Spousal and dependent child trades are also subject to this rule.
Congressional annual financial disclosures report assets and liabilities in valuation ranges (e.g. $100K–$250K). Snowball Analytics computes consistent midpoints, accounts for disclosed real estate and private holdings, and calculates estimated net worth based on reporting range midpoints with historical valuation trajectories.
Based on the disclosures tracked on this site, the most traded assets differ by member. Marjorie Taylor Greene's reports list the most trades (448), most often in US Treasury bills, Amazon, Tesla and UPS. Nancy Pelosi's 51 disclosed trades are most often in NVIDIA, Apple, Bloom Energy and Alphabet. Mitch McConnell's 14 disclosed trades are mostly Wells Fargo. The other tracked members disclosed 8 or fewer trades. These counts cover only the members listed on this site and show filing data, not all of Congress.
Disclosures under the STOCK Act are filed with a 30-to-45 day delay and report broad value ranges, not exact trade sizes. This tracker is designed for public transparency and research, not for copy-trading or investment signals.
